Benjamin Franklin Invented...

The Rhinoceros

Added Wednesday, August 5, 2009
In 1767, Benjamin Franklin took safari in Africa to see what wonders he could bring back to the American Colonies. While there, Ben was delighted to see the Hyrachyus farms of the Congo. These now extinct beasts resembled the modern day tapir, but with a slightly harder skin. On his tour of the Hyrachyus pens, he witnessed a nigh unforgivable sight. One of the Hyrachyus was being strung up and beaten. He stopped the tour immediately and rushed over to the aggressor to cease the bludgeoning. It turned out that this creature was but a calf, and severely deformed. The ranchers intended to destroy the mutant before it reached adulthood, but Ben lauded the glorious characteristics of this diamond in the rough. It had a protruding bone on its nose and folds of skin covering its arched back. After giving the local ranchers a seminar on divergence of species, their breeding program began. Benjamin Franklin was already back in Philadelphia by the time the fourth generation of their breeding program had produced the modern day rhinoceros. Since the 1800s, five new rhino species have been bred, and they have spread all over Africa.
